Five men have been arrested on charges of involvement in looting, robbery, kidnapping, possession of illegal firearms and many other crimes in Punjab and other states.
The arrest came on Sunday within 24 hours of a crime in Mansa. A double-barrel gun with 25 live cartridges, a revolver with three live cartridges, a pistol with two cartridges, and two baseball bats were seized from the accused. The police said the gang recruited many local young men in its fold.
"On June 3, Ajaib Singh, Makkhan Singh, Kuldip Singh, Gurlal Singh, Harpreet Singh Raju, and some other suspects were in a Safari Jeep when they made an open armed attack on Manmohan Singh of Thootiyanwali villages in Mansa district," said senior superintendent of police Sukhdev Singh Chahal.
"It happened outside Hotel Apna in Mansa. Within a day, we caught the culprits."
Amritpal Sharma, station house officer, City II, led the raid based on a secret input. Ajaib Singh is suspect in nearly 20 cases of murder, attempted killing, robbery, kidnapping, and possession of illegal weapons. He operated in Mansa, Bathinda, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. Gurlal Singh is charged with murder, attempted homicide, and five other crimes.
The police have applied Sections 307 (attempted murder), 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (armed riot), 149 (unlawful assembly with common intent), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 25 (identification marks on firearms) of the Arms Act in the case of attack on Manmohan Singh.
