Dr Gurpreet Singh Wander, chief cardiologist of Hero DMC Heart Institute, Ludhiana was assaulted by some miscreants in Tapa Mandi town of Bathinda district on Sunday evening.
He was returning back to Ludhiana after attending a conference in Aadesh Institute of Health Sciences near Bathinda.
Wander sustained injuries on head, knee and other parts of the body. He was admitted to neurosurgery ward of DMC hospital Ludhiana and underwent a minor surgery. The doctors attending him have stated that he is out of danger.
Sukhchain Singh Gill, SSP Bathinda is personally looking in to the matter and has initiated an investigation.
According to Dr Daljit Singh, principal DMC hospital, Wander went to attend a conference in Bathinda along with other doctors of the hospital. Ashok Dogra, Wander's driver said that as they sat in the car, around five masked miscreants intercepted them.
They first broke the windshield of the car and tried to open the driver's door but did not succeed.
“Assailants managed to open the rear door of the car and attacked Dr Wander with an iron road. The driver drove away immediately and fled. The driver took the doctor to nearby hospital where he was given first aid and referred to DMC hospital, Ludhiana,” said Daljit Singh.
“The reason behind the assault could not be ascertained as we are surprised why anyone would attack him,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}The Punjab chapter of Indian medical Association (IMA) has taken a serious note of the incident.
“This is really unfortunate, we condemn the incident. We will meet SSP Bathinda and will demand immediate action and arrest of the assailants,” said Dr Shiv Dutt, president IMA Punjab chapter.
Dr DP Singh Arora, president IMA Ludhiana chapter said, "The doctors are in a fear after this incident. We demand strict action against the culprits."
