MDU security measures hit roadblock after protest by locals

The efforts of the Maharishi Dayanand University authorities to make the security on the campus foolproof have hit the roadblock after several residents of Dev Colony, situated near the varsity, raised objection to a wall, which would have separated the varsity from the colony.

The efforts of the Maharishi Dayanand University authorities to make the security on the campus foolproof have hit the roadblock after several residents of Dev Colony, situated near the varsity, raised objection to a wall, which would have separated the varsity from the colony.

Notably, after an associate professor and director of Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management, Ashish Dahiya, was shot at by a former student on December 2, the varsity was asked by teaching, non-teaching and student fraternity to restrict the movement of outsiders on the campus. In a bid to keep a check, varsity unanimously decided to close all unmanned entry and exit points, which gave easy excess to the varsity campus.

Earlier this week, when a team of varsity officials reached to build a wall near the Dev Colony, several residents, including women, chased away the labourers. Later, the protesters also took away the bricks and construction material kept for raising the wall.

A delegation of the colony residents also met senior varsity authorities, urging not to construct wall, reasoning that several youngsters from the colony study in the school situated on the university campus and will have to take a circuitous route, if the wall comes up. When the delegation received no assurance, another group of housewives from the colony also met registrar SP Vats in this regard.
