Met predicts mild snowfall in higher areas

With no significant changes in the minimum temperature in the state, the Indian meteorological department (IMD), on Saturday, forecaste mild snow and rains in the higher altitude areas.

With no significant changes in the minimum temperature in the state, the Indian meteorological department (IMD), on Saturday, forecaste mild snow and rains in the higher altitude areas.

According to the Met department, a cyclonic circulation is extending over Haryana and neighboring areas. “Chances of snow are bleak as there are no strong western winds. There will be no significant changes in the minimum and maximum temperature in the next 48 hours,” said Shimla meteorological centre director Manmohan Singh.

Further, he said a slight western disturbance (an extratropical storm originating in the Mediterranean, which brings sudden winter rains and snow to the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent) is expected after January 30.

Keylong was recorded as the coldest place, with minimum temperature minus 11.9 °C, followed by Kalpa, at - 2.4°C.

State capital Shimla recorded a minimum of 3.7°C, while Manali recorded a minimum temperature of -2.4°C. Sky remained partially overcast at Shimla.

Minimum temperature at Dharamshala was recorded at 6.2 °C, while Sundernagar recorded a minimum of 2.4°C.

As for the rest of the state, Bhuntar recorded 2°C; Una, 5°C, Nahan , 4.8°C; Palampur, 6.8°C; Dalhousie. 4.0°C; Solan, 3°C; Chamba, 3.7°C; Kangra, 5.1°C; Bilaspur, 7.4°C and Hamirpur recorded 4.6 °C.

A Himachal Road transport corporation (HRTC) official said that vehicular traffic had resumed at bus routes across the state. “However, snow has blocked roads at some places,” he said.

Sub-division officer (SDO) of Kalpa in the Kinnaur- Prashant Deshta district said traffic wassmooth at link roads and on national highway 22, even while roads still have snow at some points. “District administration is ensuring that the traffic flow across the district is smooth.

There is uninterrupted electricity supply across the district,” he said.
