State excise & taxation minister Prakash Chaudhary has criticised the BJP-led central government for its latest ordinance to amend the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation & Resettlement Act, 2013. Talking to reporters on Thursday, he said the Modi government's decision to revise laws through an ordinance will serve the interests of industrialists, multinational companies and real estate barons.
“No one understands the need to promulgate the ordinance. The BJP led central government has proved anti-farmer. The BJP seems bent on reversing the very aspects that secured the rights of farmers, landowners and displaced people just months after it came to power on the promise of security of agricultural lands and farmers,” Chaudhary said.
He said the government had “diluted” the rights of landowners. “It seems as if the East India Company of the British era is ruling the country and is framing laws that help only the rulers as well as industrialists. There should be full consent of landowners because they depend on their lands and their consent is important. Otherwise companies with money and muscle power can get whatever they need. This is going to be very dangerous because it can lead to mass protests and unrest throughout the country later on,” he added.
Chaudhary said the amended law had left farmers unable to evaluate the cost of their lands. “Now companies will undertake the evaluation and landowners will have to vacate their lands in the name of so-called development. The move is obviously anti-farmer and is condemnable,” he added.
