Mistaken as a cow slaughterer, a vagabond shepherd was admitted to a local hospital on Saturday after members of the Gau Rakhya Dal (GRD) that protect cows wounded him with canes.
The victim, Partap Singh, stays at Gurne village in Mansa district but is from Rajasthan originally. He was sitting in the village with his cattle when assailants dragged him and cane charged him. The villagers of Gurne Kalan rescued the vagabond and took him to the Budhlada Civil Hospital, where doctors reported him to be out of danger.
The police brokered a compromise between Partap and Ajaib Singh, state member of the GRD. Partap was only dragged, the police have said, but doctors at the hospital where he was treated reported cane-charge injuries on his back. On June 10, after finding 23 cattle slaughtered near a private bone-crushing factory in Joga village of this district, villagers and demolished the unit and also the houses of two of the factory owners. Police had to cane charged the mob twice to stop arson.
In August, the police lodged a case against 40 farmers of Bathinda's Ramsran village after a train rammed seven heads of stray cattle. The government railway police (GRP) had received a complaint from Gaushala president Madan Lal that the farmers had hurled the stray cattle.

{{/usCountry}}Manjit Singh, station house officer of Sadar in Budhlada has confirmed that the parties in Saturday's incident had reached a compromise. "Partap, who is in hospital, was mistaken as cow slaughterer and dragged by Ajaib Singh, who now has apologized," said the police officer.
