Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab Ashwani Kumar led a nine-member team of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forest, in a visit to Buddha Nullah dairy complexes and another sewerage discharge unit at the rear of the Ayurvedic College building on Friday.
The panel held deliberation with members of Civil Society Organisation/NGOs, Punjab Government officials, including those from science, technology and environment. The committee was also apprised of the action plan for management of solid waste and augmenting treatment capacity of sewage treatment plants.
Ashwani Kumar, who is also chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, said, "Ludhiana is the economic capital of Punjab. While the city has played a great role in the industrial revolution of the country, the industrial growth has also deteriorated quality of air, water and other natural resources, particularly Satluj, the water of which is being used for drinking purposes in Rajasthan and South Punjab."
He stressed upon the efforts required to make the city an environmentally sustainable industrial as well as eco-tourism hub of the state.
