Muktsar MLA Sunny Brar dead; cremation today

Kanwarjit Singh Sunny Brar, sitting Congress MLA from Muktsar, died after a long illness in New Delhi. Brar, who had been suffering from cancer, was 63.

Kanwarjit Singh Sunny Brar, sitting Congress MLA from Muktsar, died after a long illness in New Delhi on Sunday. Brar, who had been suffering from cancer, was 63.

Kanwarjit was the son of former Punjab chief minister late Harcharan Singh Brar and husband of Karan Brar - who contested on the Congress ticket from Muktsar in the recent assembly elections. He is survived by mother Gurbinder Kaur Brar, wife Karan Brar and three sons. His cremation will take place at his native village, Sarai Naga, on Monday.

Kanwarjit started his political career in 1977 and defeated late Gurmeet Brar (father of senior Congress leader Jagmeet Brar) of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Later, he was appointed president of the Punjab Youth Congress. In 2007, he won the assembly elections from Muktsar.

Brar’s family had close ties with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Captain, Sukhbir condole death

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president and former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh condoled Brar’s death on Sunday in Chandigarh.

In a condolence message to the bereaved family, Amarinder said Brar’s death was a great loss to the party as it had lost a committed and dedicated leader. Amarinder said he and the entire party stood with the family in this hour of grief.
