A national seminar on "Scope of agri-business management in India" was organised at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Gurupkar Mehta and Ishan Chawla, economic professors at Symbiosis Institute of International Business (SIIB), Symbiosis International University, Pune, delivered a lecture and held an interactive session with the PAU students.

The agriculture and engineering students, pursuing their graduation and post graduation at PAU, attended the seminar.

Mehta and Chawla said, "Over 10 crore people are practicing agriculture in India. Most of them are from middle class families." They observed that land holdings were very small and new technologies were not being experimented. "Farmers are not getting adequate resources, for which there is no allocation," they said.

"Therefore, the need of the hour is to diversify agriculture for enhancing profit, reducing yield gap and exporting farm products," they emphasized.

They stressed on adopting advanced farming like horticulture, fisheries for lucrative agriculture. "As food is the need of the population, commercial production is equally essential," they added.

Referring to the scope of agri-business management, they called upon generation-Y to engage themselves into food processing sector, consultancy, retail sector and organic farming. Besides, they apprised the students of the admission process to agri-business management programme at SIIB.

PAU farm machinery and power engineering associate professor Vishal Bector proposed the vote of thanks.
