Punjab local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday flagged off 11 fire fighting vehicles for various cities in the state.
These vehicles will cater to the needs of Jalandhar, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Dinanagar, Dhuri, Sunam, Faridkot, Nabha, Dera Baba Nanak, Raikot and Nakodar.
Addressing mediapersons after the flagging-off ceremony here, Sidhu said the Punjab government has put ‘fire services and ambulances’ in the category of essential services.
He said, “It is a serious endeavour of the state government to provide all amenities of basic nature to people.”
Sidhu said eight more fire vehicles would be flagged off next week — two vehicles each for Ludhiana, Bathinda and Amritsar and one each for Jalandhar and Patiala.
He said the government will set up a fire services directorate and a fire prevention Act would also be put in place. The proposals in this regard, he said, will be discussed in the next meeting of the state cabinet.
The minister also said the state government will observe a ‘Fire extinguishing service week’ from April 17 to 21 every year.
Education minister Aruna Chaudhary, forest and wildlife preservation minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and AAP leader Aman Arora were among others who attended the event.
