A non-governmental organisation working for environmental and heritage preservation demanded the withdrawal of Punjab government proposal to set up an education city on Punjab Agricultural University's regional campus on Bathinda-Dabwali road in Bathinda.
The setting up of an Edu City would affect several important ongoing projects, including cotton research, on the PAU regional campus that is the only one of PAU in the cotton belt of Punjab, Amritsar Vikas Manch chairperson Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala said in his letters to President Prabab Mukherjee and Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil, who is also chancellor of PAU.
He pointed out that a few ongoing projects at the Bathinda campus were financed by foreign countries. The government has already constructed a cricket stadium on over 25 acres of land and handed it over to the state sports department, the letter stated.
"This is the second attempt to take the PAU land, which is meant for research. This should be checked strongly," Dr Gumtala said.
He suggested that alternative land should be purchased for the proposed education city that would be run by private companies. Land worth hundreds of crores of rupees should not be given to private companies to set up their own projects in the field of education, the NGO chairman added.
