Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), in association with Indian Council of Social Sciences Research, Chandigarh, organised a one-day seminar on "Marriage and Property Issues of NRIs: Challenges and Remedies" on the Sidhuwal campus here.
Delegates from across India deliberated upon various problems related to NRI marriages and their property disputes.
Professor Lakshmi Jambholkar from the Indian Society of International Law, New Delhi, presided over the function, while Gurpreet Kaur Deo, inspector general of police (NRI affairs) Punjab was the guest of honour.
Giving a first-hand account of the NRI problems, Deo said, "Punjab is witnessing a large number of cases related to NRI marriages and property disputes. To provide them speedy justice, the Punjab police has decided to resolve the issues within 14 days of the formal complaint."
She said that in year 2011, the police registered 61 cases of brides duped by NRI grooms.
Deo said that special police stations have been opened to deal with cases related to NRIs.
As far as property cases are concerned, most of the complaints come from Canada, United Kingdom, USA and the European countries, added the IGP.

{{/usCountry}}Jambholkar drew attention to NRI-related issues in a globalised world. She compared the present scenario of deserted Indian wives of the NRIs to those abandoned by officers under the British rule.
She emphasised the role of law-enforcing bodies in curbing such problems and suggested that a centre on private international law be opened at RGNUL.
