Octogenarian novelist and social thinker Jaswant Singh Kanwal has been honoured by the Punjabi Sabhacharak Sath, Sirhind, at Baba Zorawar Singh Baba Fateh Singh Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Sirhind, on Wedenesday.
Former deputy speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Bir Devinder Singh was the chief guest at the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Kanwal said Punjab's heritage, history, culture and language were facing a great threat, as no one would have ever thought that a state inhabited by the most hardworking people would face such a bleak future.
Kanwal, who has authored several novels and other books in Punjabi, said: “Our political leadership has failed us. They have stabbed in the back of Punjab. They are responsible for the fall of the state.”
Kanwal said the people of Punjab made the largest contribution to the freedom struggle of the country, but they were never rewarded suitably. Farmers also made a huge contribution to make the country self-sufficient in food, but even they were not given their due, he added.
Addressing the gathering, Bir Devinder Singh underlined the important works of Kanwal. Later, Kanwal was honoured by Bir Devinder Singh, HS Mann and writers Harchand Singh Sirhindi, Paramjit Kaur Sirhind and Gurnam Singh Bawa.
