The victim has been identified as Manjit Kaur, an MCom student and resident of Raikot’s Johlan village, 42 km from Ludhiana.

The woman was allegedly killed by her parents for having a relationship with a man belonging to different caste, in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The parents in collusion with other family members tried to cremate the woman early on Tuesday morning but some of the villagers informed the police regarding the issue.

Taking swift action, the police reached the cremation spot and took those parts of the body in their custody which were not burnt.

The police arrested the victim’s father Gurdeep Singh and mother Amarjit Kaur after registering a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian penal code (IPC).

Three relatives of the victim were also arrested after a case under sections 201 (destroying evidence) and 120B (conspiracy) of the IPC was registered against them.

Family members of the woman did not approve of the relationship and wanted her to marry somewhere else.
