An illegal parking stand under the flyover on Gill Road, along Sidhwan canal, is functioning without permission that too in “connivance” with some employees of the Ludhiana municipal corporation (MC).
It has been learnt that people working outside the city, especially in rural areas, generally park their vehicles at this illegal stand and take a bus to cover their remaining distance.
Residents have been demanding that the MC should make provision of a parking lot in this area.
RTI activist Kuldeep Singh Khaira complained to the MC that the parking stand owner was charging Rs 10 for two-wheelers and Rs 20 for four-wheelers from visitors.
“I have submitted a complaint to the MC on August 11, but no action has been taken against the encroacher, who is misusing the government land and earning money illegally,” he claimed.
During a visit to the area to check the violation, the HT correspondent found that a man was found charging money at this illegal parking stand. However, majority of visitors who use this parking stand were unaware that it was being run without permission.
Khaira alleged that the MC officials had failed to take action against the person who was running the illegal parking stand and were not taking steps to stop this menace.
A visitor said, “I work in a village school which is 20 km from the city. I park my two-wheeler at this parking lot and cover the remaining distance through bus. The MC should ensure a parking lot so that we can park our vehicles at safely.”
An MC superintendent claimed that there was no provision to run the parking lot under the Gill Road flyover.
The MC in the past had taken action against illegal charging from visitors at Bhadaur House.
MC’s assistant commissioner Satwant Singh said, “I have received a complaint in this regard and we will visit the place to take required action.”
