The city’s garbage collection and sanitation is set to be paralysed from next week, as the municipal corporation’s sanitation workers have announced an indefinite strike from May 26 over their pending demands.
Meanwhile, over 500 employees staged a massive protest in front of the railway station, here on Friday, to flay the decision by Patiala MC to extend the contract of 200 sanitation employees.
The decision was principally agreed in its finance and contract committee meeting.
Flaying the move, president of MC Employees Union, Naresh Bobby, said the decision was not acceptable to them as employees hired through contractors were being paid even less salary as fixed through the DC rate. “We want the MC to hire the contractual workers through regular process and if it did not happen by next week, we will go for indefinite protest from May 26,” he added
Responding to this, Mayor Amarinder Singh Bajaj said hiring regular employees was not in their purview, as contractual hiring was part of the government policy.
Bobby further highlighted that that every month the MC was deducting their mandatory contribution to provident fund, but it was further not deposited with employer’s contribution. “It is not only violation of the central government norms, but a major fraud with employees too,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}He also raised the issue of delay in monthly salaries. He said the entire system of governance was lying crippled here. “The salaries are being paid in the third week of every month, which is injustice to the employees having burden of their family responsibilities,” he added.
Road works orders worth of Rs 3 cr cleared
In its F&CC meeting, the MC cleared the road works worth of Rs 3 crore. “The work orders will soon be given to the successful bidders and they will be asked to start the construction at the earliest,” said the mayor.
