After staying away from the April 7 ‘Swaraj Samwad’ congregation, Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, member of Parliament from Patiala, is going to skip Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rebel leader Yogendra Yadav’s next meeting as well on Tuesday in Gurgaon.
He has made his reasons clear to Yadav in a letter that might be read out in public during the event. Ousted from the AAP’s national executive body last month, Yadav and fellow leader Prashant Bhushan have planned the interaction. In an informal meeting at the MP’s house here on April 8, Yadav had invited him to the meeting.
Breaking his silence on Yadav and Bhushan and their efforts to bring reforms in the party, Dr Gandhi said: “They themselves aren’t clear on what they want to do.” The MP had faced the ire of the AAP leaders and workers for his bold support to the two rebels and walkout from the national council meeting on March 28 where they had been sacked from the decision-making body.
Dr Gandhi had accused the party’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, of using muscle power to suppress the voices of Yadav and Bhushan, both founding members of the AAP. “I wouldn’t be attending Yadav’s programme, but I have written to him in detail about my position and views on the present situation in the party and what happened during the national council meeting last month,” the MP said.
The principles of the AAP were under threat after an unexpected series of event during the meeting, he said. Asked why he was shy of showing his support to Yadav, Dr Gandhi said he would fight for the party’s principles and internal democracy on his own. “If the party is uncomfortable with my actions, I am determined to speak blatantly on whatever is required for its welfare,” he said.
