It was reunion time at the Vidya Sagar Institute of Mental Health on Thusrday as Kamal Sarkar, 52, a patient who was undergoing treatment at the institute since April 2005, reunited with his family after nine years.
There were cheers at the institute as Sarkar returned home accompanied by brother Dalip Sarkar, son-in-law Shibu Shigdhar and nephew Bansi Sarkar.
A resident of Bankura district of West Bengal, Sarkar went missing from his house nearly nine years ago. He was later caught by the Border Security Force near the Indo-Pak border in Patti and on discovering about his unfit mental condition, handed over to Vidya Sagar Institute for treatment.
"Sarkar came to the institute in April 2005 after he was caught by the Border Security Force near the Indo-Pak border in Patti. During interrogation, he was unable to recall where he came from but kept saying that he belonged to Bangaldesh. Later, he was presented in front of the Tarn Taran judicial magistrate, who ordered to shift him here since he was mentally unstable," said Dr BL Goel, director of the institute.
When his treatment was started, the team of doctor at the institute discovered that Sarkar suffered from psychophrenia and his treatment was commenced. Post treatment lasting seven years, Sarkar started recuperating and it was only in January 2012 that Sarkar was able to recall his past and gave away the address of his native village.

{{/usCountry}}"On knowing that he hails from West Bengal, we approached the Resident Commissioner of West Bengal, New Delhi, to contact his family, who came here on Wednesday evening to take him," Dr Goel added.
Flashing a big smile and exchanging pleasantries with his family members in their native language, Sarkar made his way back home to his family comprising two daughters and a son.
