The court of judicial magistrate (first class) GS Sekhon has awarded three-year jail to Patti sub-divisional magistrate Rajiv Kumar Verma, patwari Praduman Singh and one Husan Lal in a land fraud case that occurred in the city in 2002.
The court also imposed a fine of 1,000 on each of them, while awarding sentence under Section 467 (forgery of valuable security) of the IPC and Section 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy). One of the accused, Jagdish Kaur, a resident of Kot Khurd village, died during the trial of the case.
Patti SDM Rajiv Kumar Verma was posted as tehsildar in the city when the land fraud occurred. A first-information report was registered against Jagdish Kaur, Husan Lal and others under various sections of the IPC at police station-4 on September 9, 2002, on the complaint of Gurmail Singh, a bank employee and a resident of Khusropur village in the district.
Gurmail had alleged that Kaur sold a 10-marla piece of land to Husan Lal at Kot Khurd village of district and khasra number of the land that was mentioned in the sale deed belonged to the land of the complainant.
The revenue officials also carried out registration of land on that khasra number.
He had also alleged that Kaur and Lal duped him in connivance with revenue officials in the district.
Gurmail had complained to the then deputy commissioner about the incident, who, in turn, referred the complaint to the SSP for inquiry. The DSP (D), Rajpal Singh, conducted an inquiry into the incident and a case was registered.
