PAU announces crop produce competition at Kisan Mela

The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will hold a crop produce competition on the first day of its Kisan Mela to be held on the varsity campus on September 12.

The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will hold a crop produce competition on the first day of its Kisan Mela to be held on the varsity campus on September 12. This year's mela is themed 'Khalas Sudhre Beej Apnao, Kharche Ghatao, Munafa Vadhao (use improved seeds; reduce cost and enhance profit)'.

Providing details of the competition, SPS Brar, senior extension specialist (field crops) and convener of produce competition committee, said the competition will see recommended varieties of vegetables, field crops and approved varieties of vegetables, fruits as well as flowers.

"The sample size of vegetables, including okra, bitter gourd, chillies, and ram tori should be half-a-kg. The sample size of brinjal, radish and cowpea or any other seasonal vegetable should be half-a-kg or three pieces, whereas of ghiya kaddu (long and round)/ halwa kaddu, it should be three pieces. The sample size of fruits like guava, lime and lemon should be half-a-kg, while that of malta/grape fruit, papaya or any other seasonal fruit should be three pieces," he said.

The sample size of flowers such as marigold should be five stems/spikes, whereas of loose rose/cut rose, and tuberose (rajni gandha) or any other flower, it should be five stems/spikes/250 g.
