Nancy Garg and Ramandeep Kaur, pursuing PhD in the department of zoology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have been honoured with the 'young scientist award' of International Union of Biological Sciences.
The award was presented to the PAU students during the 5th International Conference on Rodent Biology and Management, held at Zhengzhou, China recently. Their research work was highly perceived and appreciated by a gathering of eminent scientists from across the globe.
More than 150 participants from 25 countries, all working on rodent biology and management, attended the conference.
Baldev Singh Dhillon, vice-chancellor, PAU congratulated the students for winning the award during the international conference. Gursharan Singh, dean, postgraduate studies, lauded the efforts of the students and hoped that their achievement would motivate other students for participation at the international level.
The head of the zoology department, GK Sangha, said, “This conference is organised under the aegis of International Society of Zoological Sciences every four years, and the department of zoology, PAU has been the institutional member of the society for the last six years.”She informed that Nancy Garg was working on molecular characterisation of gene responsible for causing resistance in rats towards anticoagulant rodenticide bromadiolone in order to investigate the current status of bromadiolone resistance in Punjab state.
On the other hand, Ramandeep Kaur was working on the identification of eco-friendly plant based products having anti-feedant and repellent effect against rodent pests. In the conference, she presented her work on the potential of citronella oil as repellent against house rat. Dr Sangha congratulated the students and their guide.
