The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is organising the fourth congress on insect Science (CIS-4) on April 16 and 17, to deliberate on the significance of entemology (study of insects) in sustainable Agriculture.

The national-level conference will be conducted by the varsity in collaboration with the Indian society for the advancement of insect science (INSAIS) and the Indian council of agricultural research (ICAR).

Dr SP Bhardwaj, former vice-chancellor, Manav Bharti University, Solan, will be the chief guest while Dr HC Sharma, principal scientist (Entomology), international crops research institute for the semi-arid-tropics, Hyderabad, will be the guest of honour. PAU vice-chancellor Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon will chair the inaugural session.

Dr Balwinder Singh, president of INSAIS and director of research, PAU, said: "Insects are the most ubiquitous of all creatures and have developed more successful survival mechanisms than the others that share the planet with them."

He added that insects play a wide variety of roles in the agro-ecosystem, the most important being as pollinators of flowering plants and as pests of valuable crops.
