The MoU was signed in the presence of vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh by university registrar AS Chawla and Kamal Swarup Bhatnagar, joint director, directorate of census.

Chawla said the Planning Commission of India has approved to set up 18 workstations for research on micro-data and Punjabi University has the distinction of setting up the first centre.
He added that the objective behind setting up of the workstation is to permit qualified researchers to make optimum use of micro-data from the census for in-depth research for allowing access for generating cross-tabulation.

The Indian census has a rich tradition and enjoys the reputation of being one of the best in the world. The mammoth exercise of collection of micro-level data collected from each person in the country on different subjects will be made available to the researchers, added Chawla.
SS Khaira, dean, academic affairs, was also present.
