The state executive committee of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers' Union (PCCTU) has decided to intensify its stir against what it calls the "indifferent" attitude of the state government and policy of the principal and managing committee of Khalsa College here.
Elaborating on their action plan against the state government, PCCTU president Prof JR Prashar and general secretary Prof Kuldip Singh said a state-level rally and education bandh programme would be held in Chandigarh on November 20 with the collaboration of the Principals' Federation, Management Federation and Non-Teaching Employees' Union.
Candlelight vigils will be organised in Jalandhar on November 10, Amritsar on November 12, Muktsar on November 14, Patiala on November 15 and Ludhiana on November 16.
PCCTU state executive member and former general secretary Prof HS Walia said unwarranted delay in accepting and implementing the genuine demands of the teachers had forced the group to step up its agitation.
Prof Walia said the demands of the teachers included inter-alia, implementation of pension and gratuity scheme; disbursement of arrears according to revised pay scales from January 1, 2006 to March 31, 2010; security of service to teachers working in unaided posts as per the Security of Service Act, 1974; relaxation of refresher courses up to June 2010 as per guidelines of University Grants Commission.
GNDU area secretary Prof Tejinder Virli slammed the Khalsa College managing committee for allegedly victimising teachers and adopting dilly-dallying tactics regarding withdrawal of the FIR lodged against them. On June16, 2011, the committee and the teachers had jointly signed an agreement that the FIR against the teachers would be withdrawn. However, that has not taken place yet.

{{/usCountry}}To protest the callous attitude of the managing committee, teachers in GNDU-affiliated colleges would observe a strike during periods 3 and 4 on November 12.
Meanwhile, seven teachers against whom the FIR was lodged have mvoed the Punjab and Haryana high court for quashing it.
