Tension prevailing in Phagwara due to a bandh call by certain organisations today ebbed out by noon after an assurance by authorities of action against violent agitators as per the law.
Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal, Parshu Ram Sena and other likeminded groups had called for the bandh after hooliganism indulged in by agitators during a shutdown on Wednesday to demand clemency for Balwant Singh Rajoana.
Two groups of youths had indulged in stone-pelting on each other after which police was deployed to tackle any untoward incident.
Tension mounted as protesters started assembling at Hanumangarhi on Thursday to chalk out their court of action at a religious place. Police later confined the agitators to the religious place.
A meeting was called by Kapurthala deputy commissioner Paramjeet Singh in the presence of local MLA Som Parkash , Jalandhar range deputy inspector general of police Lok Nath Angra, Kapurthala SSP Sukhminder Singh Maan and representatives of both the sides.
"We have asked people to maintain peace in the city. Shiv Sainiks approached the local MLA on Wednesday night with their complaint. He also advised them to keep calm and discussed the matter with us. We have assured them of strict action against those involved in Wednesday's incidents. Cases would be registered against defaulters as per law," revealed the DC.

As public announcements regarding the meeting outcome was made, normalcy returned to Phagwara by noon, markets opening and people pouring into the streets.
