The families of Krishan Bhagwan Singh and Gurdeep Singh, who were killed in a recent police firing in a Kotkapura village, were given Rs 10 lakh each as compensation on Friday.
Deputy commissioner Malwinder Singh Jaggi said this, adding that the government had also assured the families to provide a job each to them.
Meanwhile, the two bodies were cremated on Friday. The cremation of Krishan Bhagwan Singh of Niamiwala village took place around 12.30 pm after his body was brought to the village in the morning after the post-mortem on Thursday.
Many hardliners and Sikh organisations wanted to cremate the body at a religious place, but the family did not agree to it. The protesters also raised anti-government and anti-police slogans at the cremation site.
A speaker addressing the gathering at the village gurdwara after the cremation said, “It is a brutality by police and a murder. The case has been dealt with under Section 174 of the CrPC but we want the registration of a criminal case against the accused for opening fire.”
Meanwhile, hardliners resisted the cremation of Gurdeep Singh, 25, of Sarawan village and blocked the way of the vehicles as they started leaving for the cremation ground.

{{/usCountry}}Earlier, Gurdeep’s family allowed the body to be taken for post-mortem in the morning. Hardliners wanted to delay the cremation till Sikh preachers Panthpreet Singh and Ranjeet Singh Dhandrianwala were released.
At Gurdeep’s house, Harjinder Singh, former sarpanch of Khakharwala village, said, “The desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib is a serious matter, and instead of identifying the accused, police killed the innocent. There should be a judicial inquiry into the incident. But the Akali leaders have been pressing the families to cremate the bodies.”
