Students left their classes around 10.30am and joined those who failed to clear the reappear. Blocking the traffic on the Lodowali road, they raised slogans against the board and demanded abolition of break system.

"Under check and balance system of the board, all those who have failed to clear their first semester are not eligible to take admission in the fifth semester. This means we will have to drop one academic year to clear the first semester," said another student.

The pass percentage of several colleges in mathematics and science was below 10% in the state, which indicated something fishy in the system, a faculty member said on the condition of anonymity.

The city police reached the spot and managed to shift the protesters inside the college premises after nearly half an hour.

College principal Narinder Singh said: "We have informed the board officials about the students' grudges. They have to guide us on the norms."
