The local police, on a tip-off, raided Malwal Kadim village (also known as Basti Bhag Singh) on the Ferozepur-Moga road under Ghallkhurd police station on Tuesday and found the cultivation of poppy husk over two kanals of panchayati land in the village by Mehar Singh, former sarpanch of the village, who had taken the land on contract for farming.
The police team was led by Kikar Singh, in-charge, CIA, Ferozepur.
When contacted, Hardiyal Singh Mann, senior superintendent of police, confirmed the cultivation of the contraband and said that a case had been registered against Mehar Singh under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act .
Mehar Singh had also earlier remained chairman of the market committee, Ferozepur Cantonment, during the Congress regime and was booked in several other cases in the past, police sources said.
The police uprooted the crop of the contraband and sent its sample for test to a laboratory. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused who is absconding.
