Poverty forces farmer to end life

Disturbed over his poor economic condition, a 50-year-old farmer hanged himself from a tree in a farm in the wee hours of Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Amarjit Singh of Jodhpur Pakhar village in the district.

Disturbed over his poor economic condition, a 50-year-old farmer hanged himself from a tree in a farm in the wee hours of Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Amarjit Singh of Jodhpur Pakhar village in the district.

The victim is survived by wife, three daughters and a son. Victim's wife Gurmeet Kaur told the police that Amarjit was under great mental stress due to poor economic condition of the family. Amarjit used to cultivate three acres of land belonging to someone else and was lately finding it hard to make both ends meet.

Police said that in the wee hours of Wednesday, Amarjit told his wife that he was going to water his fields, where he hanged himself from a tree using a turban.

Maur SHO said the victim was landless and had been cultivating three acres of land for a long time. He said the three daughters of the victim were married and his son was not into farming. “He was not under debt, but, it seems, was hard pressed to make both ends meet.
