Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal said that it was the cumulative responsibility of the society to prevent crime against women. "We must curb practices, which affect the moral fabric of the society," the CM said. He was in Chabbewal to attend the wedding of chief parliamentary secretary Sohan Singh Thandal's daughter.
He said it was unfair to hold the police responsible for all the wrongs and every citizen must realize a and do his duty. "Crimes take place in other states too. Delhi has one of the highest crime rates in the country. I don't claim that Punjab is a crime free state but we are much better off," he said, adding that the state police had been asked to work swiftly in gender related crimes. He expressed his concern over the occurrence of rape cases stating that it was 'highly condemnable'.
Asked if the government would ban lewd singing, he said that that the government was serious about the matter.
"We are contemplating measures on our part, but at the same everyone should introspect as to what impact his actions are having on the society," he added.
Later, the chief minister paid a surprise visit to Mahilpur civil hospital to get a feel of the working conditions. He was told that the posts of senior medical officer (SMO) and gynaecologist were lying vacant and there was shortage of dental material, medicines and X-Ray films.

He said the government was trying its best to provide as many facilities as possible to government health institutions.
