The tax is on farmland in the Bathinda municipal limits, and it was discussed on Tuesday in the general-house meeting of the local civic body.

The municipal corporation (MC) notice stated that the tax is on 'land' but didn't given us a clear definition of 'land," said councillor Gill. "When I raised the question, the ruling group said that it would be on entire land in the MC juridiction."

Gill suggested exempting vacant plots, self-occupied land, and the property of ex-servicemen, widows, soldiers, and disabled people from this law, which the corporation declined.

The MC has extended its limits of late to include more villages. "Farmers are under huge debt and further tax on land is injustice to them," said Gill. "In the Congress regime, no such tax was imposed. I will write to Captain Amarinder Singh, and ask him to get the party's state agricultural cell to oppose it."
