The protesters accused the local police of protecting the accused and delaying the arrest. "Though a special team has been formed by the police to look into the case, the investigations are going on at a snail's pace, as only one accused has been arrested till now," said Darshan Pal, a Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakaunda) leader.

Following a complaint by Bakhshiwal village resident Sardara Singh, Kherhi Gandian police station had registered an FIR against five of his daughter's in-laws' family for burning her to death over dowry.

After the arrest of the main accused Jagdish Singh, the police had formed an SIT to ascertain the role of others in the case. According to the FIR, Sardara's daughter Karamjit Kaur was married to Jagdish Singh in 2008, but the entire family tortured her for dowry.
