PSPCL official who took poison dies in hospital

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) deputy chief engineer (border zone) Balbir Singh, who had attempted suicide on Friday by consuming poison, died on Sunday in a private hospital here.

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) deputy chief engineer (border zone) Balbir Singh, who had attempted suicide on Friday by consuming poison, died on Sunday in a private hospital here.

His family had alleged that harassment by some officials in his department had kept him under stress. Kamla Devi, his widow, said he had been denied promotion that was due. The PSPCL officer took poison on Friday at his house in Diamond Colony, Majitha Road.

The police came to the hospital only after the officer’s death. ACP (north) Harjit Singh Dhaliwal said they would initiate action after recording the statements of Balbir Singh’s family and colleagues.

Terming the incident as unfortunate, Dr Raj Kumar Verka, vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes demanded tough action against whoever had forced the officer
