The state vigilance bureau on Monday opened its awareness week to promote new measures against corruption. The objective is to educate people about the working of the bureau and involve them in the campaign to check bribes.

During the week, the bureau will organise seminars in cities and villages, conduct debate competitions in educational institutions, and put up banners at public places to drive home its point. Bathinda's senior superintendent of police (vigilance) met the deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) from Mansa, Faridkot, and Bathinda on the first day of the vigilance awareness week and administered them the oath to fight corruption and be honest in conduct.

The SSP also called up common people to listen to their conscience and resolve not to pay bribe. If the government officials demand bribe, people can report it on new telephone helpline numbers released on Monday. Village panches and sarpanches, and non-government organisations will be asked to take the message to the rural areas.
