This was among a slew of decisions taken at a emergency meeting called by transport secretary Anurag Aggarwal all district transport officers (DTOs), state transport commissioner, transport director and others officials on Friday.

State transport director MS Jaggi told HT on Monday, “The department will invite tenders for CCTV cameras at bus stand within two days.”

He added that directions have also been issued to ensure that CCTV cameras are installed in luxury buses.

The transport department has also planned an orientation course program for drivers and conductor of government and private buses at Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Chandigarh and the State Institute of Automotive and Driving Skill in Muktsar Sahib.

“The bus staff will be educated and sensitised by experts under a special refresher course to be held within next 10 days,” a top official said.

Bus companies have also been asked to display name, age and address of driver and contact numbers within and outside buses. The transport director has also been directed to start the speeding up of installing GPS (global positioning system) in February 2015.

The state has 12,000 private buses, 7,000 mini buses and 3,000 Punjab Roadways and Punbus buses plying on the roads.
State transport commissioner Ashwani Kumar said, “Directions have been issued. The dates of the orientation courses will be decided soon.”

He added that 201 challans of buses, including black films, curtains were issued by DTOs over the weekend.
