Having been found guilty of misusing official powers, the Punjab government had placed the Ludhiana municipal commissioner Malwinder Singh Jaggi under suspension on July 16.

A preliminary inquiry was conducted by Punjab additional director general of police (ADGP), intelligence, HS Dhillon following the HT report on July 14, 'Offended officer's wife makes the vendor pay'.

Soon after, the government had also ordered a fact-finding inquiry, which was conducted by Patiala divisional commissioner AS Pannu.

Pannu inquired into the incident, recorded the statements of the individuals involved in the incident and subsequently submitted the report to the government.

Jaggi's wife Inderbir Kaur had visited a vend in Dandi Swami Chowk from where she had been buying vegetables for the past decade. In the absence of vend owner Kamlesh Pal, his nephew Sukhbir was running the shop. There was an argument between Inderbir and Sukhbir.

Taking offence, Inderbir threatened him with dire consequences and soon after, a team of the municipal corporation's tehbazari wing that penalises hawkers and vendors for violations arrived and ransacked the vend. Corporation workers repeated the ransacking act for three days and allegedly told the vend owner to apologise to the MC commissioner's wife.

Principal secretary, local bodies, Suresh Kumar was not available for comment.
