Punjab Home Guard jawan Dalbir Singh has charged the police with not taking action against a resident of his village, Damanpreet Singh, for assaulting him, under pressure from a former Akali minister, who happens to be a close relative of the accused.
The Gurdaspur Sadar police station had registered a case against Damanpreet of Nabipur village near here under sections 307, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC and sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act on November 9.
Dalbir said on Monday that he was assaulted by Damanpreet Singh, his driver Rakesh Kumar, another villager, Deepa, and three unidentified persons at his house in Nabipur village after a minor quarrel between his son Mandeep Singh and Rakesh Kumar. He alleged that Damanpreet had also fired shots from his double-barrel gun. He said Damanpreet was forcing him to withdraw the case.
SSP Rajjit Singh said the police were not under any pressure from any ruling party leader and were taking prompt action in the case. Defending the delay in the inquiry, he said the police were conducting an inquiry at the request of the accused, who claimed that he had been framed.
Meanwhile, PPCC member Raman Bahl brought Dalbir Singh to the Hindustan Times office here and alleged that there was a total collapse of law and order in Gurdaspur because of the highhandedness of Akali leaders and workers. He said the police were feeling helpless due to pressure from the "bad" elements belonging to the ruling party.

He demanded justice for Dalbir, who was enlisted as a special police officer after he had nabbed an armed terrorist in his village in 1989. Later, he was recruited in the Punjab Home Guards.
