Punjab roadways employees' Joint Action Committee held a protest against the government in the premises of Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Interstate Bus Terminal on Thursday, demanding recruitment of new staff, increase in pay scale and change in routes and time of buses.
The protesters alleged that despite repeated meetings for the past two years with the chief minister and the state transport minister regarding their demands, no concrete solution was provided to them.
The protesters said they met state transport minister Ajit Singh Kohar on October 20, 2012, state finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa on February 9, 2013, and chief minister on September 8, 2014, but it yielded no results.
Amrik Singh Gill, committee convener said, "We have asked the government to fulfill our long pending demand of merging 571 debt-free buses, which were provided to private players on lease, with the mainstream Punjab Roadways and provide jobs to the family members of roadways employees, who lost their life in road accidents."
Gill also warned the government that if the demands of the union members were not met at the earliest, the union would hold a massive protest in Jalandhar next month.
