All India Trade Union Congress' (AITUC) president Pardeep Singh, said, "Promotions of more than 700 employees engaged in the transport department's workshops are pending for the past five years. Electricians, welders, carpenters- all are waiting for their promotions. The transport department has not hired new people nor has it promoted the existing employees in spite of various posts being vacant."

The union's general secretary Harbansh Singh alleged that only a handful of workshop employees who were close to the department's officials received promotions while others got transferred.

"Transport department's favoritism towards certain employees will not be tolerated. We are carrying out a state-wide protest in Ropar (Rupnagar) on June 25 where the heads of various transport unions from all 18 depots will assemble to voice their concerns against the department," Singh said adding that if their demands were not met then they would "intensify (their) fight against corruption".
