On the bhog ceremony of Manmeet Alisher, a 29-year-old bus driver who died in Australia last month, hundreds including Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia, finance minister Parminder Dhindsa, Congress MLA Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and former member of parliament Vijay Inder Singla paid tribute to Manmeet at his native village Alisher on Tuesday.
Manmeet died on October 28 when a man hurled an incendiary device at him and set him alight in front of other bus passengers in Brisbane.
“Punjab government will soon send a proposal to the Centre to set up a special cell for ensuring safety and security of Indians living abroad,” Majithia said.
On the occasion, Dhindsa announced to establish a multi-purpose sports stadium in the memory of Manmeet at Alisher village. He further said that Sunam-Jakhal road will be widened and named after Manmeet.
“Alisher was a talented boy who had earned a lot in short span but unfortunately, we lost him,” said Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.
Blame game on SYL
Despite a special session of Punjab assembly has been called by the state government to discuss the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, Congress is still claiming that SAD-BJP government has failed to defend the matter at every step.
“Akali Dal had raised the issue of Punjabi suba and Haryana is the result of their demand. If they could have not demanded Punjabi suba, the state would have not faced this problem,” said the former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.

added.
However, Majithia said, “We don’t want any politics on the issue but will save Punjab’s water.”
“The former prime minister Indira Gandhi and Captain Amarinder Singh were responsible for this division who played a major role in the merger of SYL.
Even Bir Devinder Singh, who was part of Congress criticised Amarinder’s role,” he added.
