Punjabi University authorities on Wednesday handed over relieving orders to 68 non-teaching employees working in the university for past many years.
However, university authorities claimed that the decision to relieve 39 clerks and 29 laboratory attendants was taken following a directive from the Punjab and Haryana high court.
Meanwhile, heavy resentment prevailed among the affected employees and employees' unions.
As per available information, the high court has also served contempt notices to Vice chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh and registrar Dr AS Chawla for not following its directive to fill vacancies of 414 non-teaching posts on a regular basis.
The court has sought reply from university authorities in this regard before January 31.
The university authorities had given an undertaking to the court on May 28, 2009, for filling 414 non-teaching posts by May 2010. But instead of regularsing the posts through proper channel and open competition, the university had granted extension to the contract of around 206 non-teaching employees including ad hoc peons, technical assistants and lab attendants.
"Of 206 non-teaching employees, we have regularized the posts as required by us, while remaining employees are relieved with immediate effect", said senior functionary of the university.
Earlier, the university had relieved 26 employees after they failed the typing test but they managed to get a stay against the university's decision till February 10.

VC Dr Jaspal Singh and registrar AS Chawla could not be contacted despite several attempts.
