One of the maternal uncles of Sunil Kumar of village Chanour in district Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) was about to tie 'sehra', and the women were singing wedding songs.
Only a couple of hours before Sunil's barat was to leave the house, a Ludhiana police team landed there and arrested the bridegroom.
Sunil has been accused of rape by his girlfriend who had filed an FIR against him in the police station Ladhowal a few days back.
The shocked family of the accused came with the police team to Ludhiana. They even met the girl who had levelled rape charges against Sunil, and pleaded with her to take back the case.
The girl, a worker in a hosiery factory here, had alleged that Sunil had had physical relations with her and they were planning to marry.
Assistant sub-inspector Mohinder Singh, police station Ladhowal, said the girl approached the police saying her boyfriend had cheated on her and had gone to his native village to marry another girl.
Sunil used to work in the same factory with the complainant.
Sub-inspector Gurpreet Singh, SHO, police station Ladhowal, said, the police had arrested the accused, and would produce him before the court on Monday.
