Residents of BRS Nagar staged a protest against the administration and railways' move to close the railway crossing near J Block BRS Nagar after an 18-year-old boy was run over by a train on Saturday.
The residents kept the railway track closed from morning till evening. Assistant divisional railway manager (ADRM) Mahavir Singh and officials from the administration also visited the spot that residents ended their protest.
The residents demanded the opening of railway crossing near J block BRS Nagar which had been closed since December 6 due to the opening of a railway underpass on Lodhi Club Road.
Balbir Singh, vice-president of BRS Nagar residential colony, said: "This is a serious issue and the government should understand our problems. The railway crossing connected 18 colonies and thousands of residents pass through it." He said the railway underpass was not safe for school-going children and old-age people due to huge flow of vehicles through it.
"The body of deceased identified as Shammi Kumar was handed over to the parents after the post-mortem examination. The victim was wearing headphones and failed to listen to many horns and even signals from the gate keeper. A case under section 174 of the CrPC has been registered," said Inderjeet Singh, inspector, GRP.
Several trains were affected due to the protest by BRS Nagar residents on Saturday. New Delhi-Moga Shatabdi (12043) could not go to Moga and was short terminated at the Ludhiana station. The passengers, who had to board the train from Moga, had to face inconvenience due to protest. The Ludhiana-Ferozepur passenger trains also got affected due to the protest.
