City residents faced a tough time with two back-to-back events this weekend leading to major traffic chaos in the city.
The police stationed outside Guru Nanak Stadium, the venue for the World Kabaddi Cup final, from the past four days for security arrangements had restricted the movement of the public on the Basant Singh Khalsa road and later closed it since Friday.
The residents of Basant Singh Khalsa road faced problems in reaching their home.
The chaos did not end with the world cup finale. On Sunday, the religious procession of Bhagwan Jagan Nath Rath Yatra kept the roads occupied. The major roads were blocked by the police for the procession. The traffic at Ferozepur road was also diverted to alternative routes.
Despite opting alternative routes to reach their destinations, people were left distressed.
The events also kept the police on its toes. After maintaining strict security arrangements at Guru Nanak Stadium on Saturday, officials were again on the road to make arrangements for the rath yatra.
Raman Kumar, a resident of Model Town, said, "The main road should not be blocked. The city has already been reeling under traffic problem and blockage of main road further paralysed the city."
A cop, requesting anonymity, said he was on duty from the past five days. "We haven't slept from the past five days and were again called for duty on Sunday."
They should introduce shift system in the police departments, he added.
