LUDHIANA: The residents of Hargobind Nagar and adjoining areas have written to the central government to provide funds to cover Ganda Nullah, as neither the municipal corporation (MC) authorities nor the state government have bothered to look into the problems being faced by them.
The project was started around four years ago but left before completion due to lack of funds.
The nullah, which has started overflowing due to rain which hit the city recently, has compounded the problems of the residents of Hargobind Nagar and adjoining areas.
Residents had lost various articles worth lakhs during rain as the dirty water overflowed and entered into streets. Locals say debris of old walls and garbage are still lying in the nullah as no steps have been taken to clean the filth for the past three to four years.
“Earlier, the MC used to clean the nullah before every rainy season but they have stopped doing so. However, new safety walls have been constructed on the banks of nullah but the old wall of nullah is continuously getting damaged,” said BL Bhatia, who is president of Janta Welfare Society.
“We have written to the Centre to provide us around `12 crore to cover this pending project. We have learnt that the state government have also demanded funds from the central government for a project on Ferozepur Road and other incomplete projects,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}“We are living under hell-like conditions. It is due to filth that a majority of residents are suffering from various health problems,” Balbir Singh, a resident, said.
He said the project was planned around 10 years ago but it came in action in 2010 after the suggestions from Roorke College of Engineers.
Atam Parkash Arora, who is vice-president of Janta Welfare Society, said: “The nullah overflowed due to non-existence of the wall along it. The sewer lanes were choked due to filth making the area a perfect ground for mosquitoes. We appeal to the central government to listen to our request.” Despite several attempts, zonal commissioner of MC, Kamlesh Bansal, was not available for comment.
