The mortal remains of Lance Naik Harpreet Singh of the Eighth Sikh Regiment, who laid down his life while combating militants in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) a couple of days back, were consigned to the flames at his native village Abbusaid near here on Sunday.
Martyr’s father Gurmail Singh lit the pyre as jawans from the army reversed arms as a mark of respect and honour to their departed colleague.
The entire village turned up to pay their respects to the Lance Naik whose body was brought to the village wrapped in the Tricolour.
A number of civil and army officials, including Capt Sunil Kumar of the Eighth Sikh Regiment, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Tejinderpal Singh Sandhu, sub divisional magistrate (SDM) Surinder Singh and Ajnala deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Tilak Raj placed wreaths on the body of the brave soldier.
Others who paid floral tributes were former Lok Sabha member and former minister Rattan Singh and Colonel Sapnesh Parihar, who represented Amritsar-based Panthers Division, and several colleagues from the martyrs’ regiment.
The ADC announced that the widow of the Lance Naik would be given a government job as per her educational qualifications. He also announced that the government would bear all the expenses for the education of the two daughters of the army jawan.
