Targeting the Congress candidate from Amritsar Captain Amarinder Singh for his alleged clean chit to Jagdish Tytler over 1984 riots, hundreds of riot victim families from Delhi and Ludhiana staged a vociferous protest near his election office here on Wednesday.
Backed by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), the agitators raised slogans against the Congress and Amarinder for hurting the Sikh sentiments before burning the latter's effigy.
The protesters also had a minor scuffle with the police and uprooted barricades when the latter stopped them some distance away from Amarinder's election office where they wanted to hold the protest.
Slamming Amarinder for issuing a 'clean chit' to Tytler, the protesters carrying placards against the Congress leader, sat on roads at various places to register their protest.
Despite the deployment of police force in large numbers, some protesters did manage to go right outside the gate of Amarinder's election office.
Talking to mediapersons, Surjit Singh, president of the 1984 Danga Peerat Welfare Society, Ludhiana said, "The riot victim families are fighting for justice for the past 30 years and suddenly Amarinder Singh has come out and offered a 'clean chit' to Jagdish Tytler".
Terming Amarinder as a 'traitor', Surjit Singh said, "The real face of Amarinder has come out. The national leaders of the Congress in Delhi and the leaders like Amarinder in Punjab are not bothered about justice to riot victim families".
