The foundation stone of the project was laid on Thursday by BJP MLA and chief parliamentary secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu. Verka falls in the Amritsar East constituency that she represents.
Present on the occasion was local MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, and Punjab Sewerage and Water Supply Board chairman Baldev Raj Chawla.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Dr Sidhu said she was fulfilling the demand that had been put forth by the electorate of her constituency. "I had promised to them during the election campaign and am fulfilling the commitment," she added.

She said that once the project was complete, all households in Verka would be connected to public sewers. In addition, two sewerage treatment plants would also be installed, she added.

MP Sidhu, in his address, spoke of the numerous development projects that had been initiated by the government in the past five years. He said the SAD-BJP government was committed to providing all basic amenities to the people of the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Chawla said the government was committed to providing clean drinking water and sewerage facilities in all cities and towns of the state. So far the government had given clearance to Rs-5,928 crore sewerage-laying projects, he added.

Chawla said that with this project, the total amount sanctioned for sewerage works in the holy city had gone up to Rs 752 crore. The work on the Rs 430-crore sewerage project in the densely populated areas of Amritsar South and Central constituencies was in progress.
