In a press statement issued on Saturday here, the former chief minister argued that “in states such as Punjab, where farmers are committing suicide almost every day, this meagre hike will serve no purpose”. He said the market rate of basmati had dropped from Rs 3,400 per quintal last year to Rs 1,400 per quintal this year. He asked the central government to “take the agrarian crisis seriously”.
