An Akali leader has accused a cop of the district police of beating him and two of his associates mercilessly at the Canal Colony police station on Wednesday night.

Manjit Singh, who claimed himself to be Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president of ward number 38 here, alleged that assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ajaib Singh beat him and his two associates Tarsem Singh and Babbu.

Manjit Singh is son of Sukhdev Singh, who was booked under Section 283 of IPC for overloading wheat straw in a tractor trolley and was released on bail on Wednesday.

He alleged that, after completing all the legal formalities for the release of the tractor trolley, which was parked on the Multania road after his father's arrest he, with the two others, went to drive home the tractor trolley, but the cops on a PCR vehicle stopped him from doing so and they called ASI Ajaib Singh.

"When the ASI reached we were resting by the side of the tractor trolley. But the ASI started beating us. The ASI and the other policemen put us in a police vehicle and took us to the Canal Colony police station where we were again beaten up mercilessly during Wednesday night," he alleged. The three were released in the morning.

Meanwhile, the accused cop has been taken off duty from the police station and shifted to the police lines till an inquiry in the matter gets completed. Superintendent of police (city) Desraj said that the accused cop has been taken off duty and an inquiry has been ordered. He, however, said that a preliminary inquiry has revealed that the men were heavily drunken and were creating nuisance on the road and the police had to take them to the police station.
